Elkton Solar Eclipse 2017

On August 21, 2017 at 1:25 pm, Elkton will be in the path of the Total Solar Eclipse!  The duration of the total eclipse in Elkton, which is amount of time the sun is completely covered by the moon, will last about 2 minutes and 39 seconds.  During this time, the sky will go completely dark just like it was nighttime and temperatures will drop.  Visit www.eclipse2017.org for more information about this amazing event.

What is a Total Solar Eclipse? “A total eclipse is when the moon goes in between the sun and the earth, and as the moon ‘moves’ across the face of the sun, its very thin shadow passes along a “path” on the ground. You have to be in that path in order to see the “total” eclipse. If you’re outside it, you’ll only get to see a partial eclipse (boring!) — and if you’re just barely outside the path, you’ll see a very deep partial eclipse — but even that is not anything you’d necessarily want to leave your desk at work to see!” (From www.eclipse2017.org) So, if you are in Elkton, you have the exciting opportunity to be in the path of the total eclipse!

Can I look at the Sun during the Eclipse? Only during the period of totality!  If you want to watch the entire event other than during the totality, you will need special eclipse viewing glasses.  Several groups in Elkton and Todd County are working together to make sure there are special certified glasses available for viewing the event safely.
