The City of Elkton and Kentucky Humanities bring Smithsonian exhibit,\u00a0<\/strong>Hometown Teams<\/em><\/strong>, to Elkton, KY.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>ELKTON, KY <\/strong>(September 15, 2017) \u2013 The City of Elkton <\/strong>y Kentucky Humanities <\/strong>will explore how sports shape our lives and communities with the Smithsonian Institution traveling exhibit, Hometown Teams, <\/em>which opens Saturday<\/strong>, <\/em>October 7th<\/sup><\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

The exhibit will be on display at the Todd County Welcome Center<\/strong> (Palacio de justicia hist\u00f3rico del condado de Todd<\/strong>) until Veterans Day, November 11th<\/sup>. Hometown Teams<\/em> will be open during those dates each Sunday<\/strong> from 2 p.m. until 6 p.m.; each Monday<\/strong> y Tuesday<\/strong> for Special Groups only; and each Wednesday<\/strong> through Saturday<\/strong> from 12 p.m. until 7 p.m.<\/span><\/p>\n

The \u201cKickoff<\/strong>\u201d for Hometown Teams<\/em> will be on Saturday, October 7th<\/sup>, at 9 a.m. on the Square in Elkton at the Todd County Welcome Center<\/strong> (Palacio de justicia hist\u00f3rico del condado de Todd<\/strong>). \u00a0In addition to the Smithsonian exhibit, a collection of sports memorabilia from local sports teams and well-known sports figures from our community will be on display.<\/span><\/p>\n

Hometown Teams <\/em>captures the stories that unfold on the neighborhood fields and courts, and the underdog heroics, larger-than-life legends, fierce rivalries and gut-wrenching defeats. For more than 100 years, sports have reflected the trials and triumphs of the American experience and helped shape the national character. Whether it is professional sports or those played on the collegiate or scholastic level, amateur sports or sports played by kids on the local playground, sports are everywhere in America. Nowhere do Americans more intimately connect to sports than in their hometowns.<\/span><\/p>\n

Kentucky Humanities chose the City of Elkton to host Hometown Teams<\/em> as part of the Museum on Main Street project \u2014 a national\/state\/local partnership to bring exhibitions and programs to rural cultural organizations. Museum on Main Street is a partnership of the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service, the Federation of State Humanities Councils and state humanities councils nationwide. The United States Congress and the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet provide support to the Museum on Main Street project. The exhibition is touring 15 communities in Kentucky from March 18, 2017 through December 29, 2018. <\/strong>This program has been made possible through a matching grant from the Kentucky Humanities Council in cooperation with the National Endowment for the Humanities.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cSharing exhibits from our nation\u2019s premier museum with rural Kentucky communities is an endeavor Kentucky Humanities is passionate about,\u201d said Bill Goodman, executive director. \u201cWe knew that Hometown Teams<\/em> was the perfect exhibit for us to bring to the Commonwealth, given the state\u2019s passion for sports.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
