Elk Statue Unveiling

Elkton Mayor Arthur Green is excited to announce the unveiling of a new elk statue on Public Square in Elkton, Kentucky. Mayor Arthur Green is donating the statue to the citizens of Elkton in commemoration of Elkton’s Bicentennial in 2020. The elk statue will be located on the east lawn on the Historic 1835 Courthouse, 1 Public Square, where the unveiling and ceremony will be held on Saturday, November 21, 2020 at 11 am local time.

The elk statue memorializes Elkton’s beginnings. Called “Elk Town” for the large herds once drawn to a salt lick, Elkton began as a small settlement just west of Elk Fork Creek located east of the current Public Square. In March 1819, Thomas Garvin and Thomas Jameson laid out the original eighteen-lot plat of the town of Elkton. However, most believe the town officially commenced on May 8, 1820, when Elkton was designated the county seat of Todd County. The Town of Elkton was formally established by an Act of the Kentucky Legislature on December 9, 1820.

The ceremony will begin with a welcome from Elkton Mayor Arthur Green, who will then proceed with the unveiling of the elk statue. Since 2020 is also the Bicentennial celebration for Todd County, there will also be an address by Todd County Judge/Executive Todd Mansfield. There will also be brief historical presentations about Elkton and Todd County, musical guests, and recognition of special guests in attendance. A more detailed program agenda will be announced soon.

After the ceremony, there will be Elkton memorabilia give-a-ways, an Elkton-Todd County Bicentennial Gift Basket drawing, Elkton Bicentennial coins and pins for sale, and more. Also, to commemorate Elkton’s Bicentennial after the ceremony, you can visit any Elkton restaurant and receive a commemorative Elkton, Kentucky elk logo stadium cup with your purchase while supplies last.

The City of Elkton requests everyone attending the ceremony observe recommended social distancing guidelines to prevent the spread of the COVID-19 virus and to wear a face covering while attending the event.
